This book intrigued me from the offset. Beautifully illustrated and with a sumptuous cover, this is the story of the Selkies, the mythical seal like creatures that assume a human form on land.
It tells the story of young passionate love between a selkie and Flora McCraiceann, a wild land maid. Whilst passion draws the selkie to the shore, Flora must use trickery to keep him loyal. With his seal skin stolen the selkie is powerless and eventually captured by the trickery of the land folk. But will the beckoning of the sea be too strong to hold him to the land for long?
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. It wouldn't have been a usual read but I loved how timeless it felt - a stunning and original fairytale set against a universal backdrop of love, revenge and loss. It has adventure on the high seas aplenty and brings to life the mythical selkie in the most magical way. It is incredibly dark and sad at times but nevertheless a tale of adventure with wild and epic proportions. One of my favourite reads recently!
